My gratitude knows absolutely no bounds.
I won; we won.
I woke up at about 0500hours (GMT+1) on Saturday, 29th October 2016 – and shortly after, learned that this blogazine had been named BEFFTA (Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts) award for Blog of the Year 2016.
I am pleasantly surprised. And so grateful.
When I first got the idea for what turned into this blogazine, just over a year ago – I knew it had to be something different from the norm. I was determined that I wouldn’t do what everyone else was doing; in my head, there was no point if I couldn’t distinguish myself from others. So, I talked to my friend, Dr Nkem Ezeilo about it – including my concerns. And I still remember what she said, “If nobody else is doing this, it means you’ll be great at it. My celebrity friend, I don’t see what the problem is, oh!”
Then, I started to talk to Ibukun Onitiju about it … and we had a number of emails and phone calls, going back and forth. He helped me crystallise the ideas into what I realised was a blogazine. I tend to ask lots of questions, which can be exasperating for some. But I’m one of those who likes to understand and be sure of exactly what I’m signing up for. And I speak really quickly when I’m excited, which tends to happen when my tongue is trying to catch up with my brain (I can have three different conversations, which have nothing to do with each other, with the same person in less than five minutes) – but Ibukun was/is a real trooper. Incredibly knowledgeable and understands my intensely craaaaazy work ethic.
So, just over a year later, here we are.
A part of me is not too happy about the fact that Nkem isn’t physically here, but I swear I can hear her softly saying, “I told you so!” And I am so grateful. I’m mega-grateful to everyone who reads this blogazine, the guest-bloggers, those who let me tell their stories through EROBOT ON TRIAL and DIARY OF A REBELLE, those who have become fans of the “Memo From A Fearless Storyteller” blogazine because of either series, everyone I have ever interviewed for the Black Power column, my uber-cool PR team (X-Factor Communications) and everyone who voted . I am so grateful to BEFFTA and the founder, Dr. Pauline Long – who will probably never understand just what she’s done for my career.
Thank you so much!
PS: EROBOT ON TRIAL is on (what I hope is) a mini-break and will return very soon.
