Rhesa Owusu: Model Behaviour

She first came to the notice of many when she became the First Runner-Up for Divas of Colour in 2014. Two years later, Rhesa Owusu has gone on to win the 2016 BEFFTA for Female Model of the Year.

There are some lessons she’s learned, that some of us wish we’d known before we turned 17 …

Name: Rhesa Owusu
Best Known For: Winner of Best Female Model 2016 BEFFTA (Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts) Award, and Diva of Colour 2014 First-Runner Up
Website: In progress
Describe yourself in three words: I’d say I’m very creative, fun and positive
Previous Occupation: I’m only 17, so I’m still a student and I also model.
Describe your outlook & what makes your work/brand unique: My outlook is based on a quote from Chanel “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself”. The thing that makes my brand unique is my versatility. I am an aspiring designer I can apply both perspectives in my work.

Your greatest career highlights to date: Winning “Best Female Model” at the BEFFTA 2016 awards was a really great moment, because its nice to be recognised for your hard work especially at a young age. Also, becoming Divas of Colour 2014 first runner-up at only 14 years old was good.
Is international appeal important to you? International appeal and longevity are important me.
Most important piece of equipment you use in your career: That’s a hard one I think I’ve got more than one and they would be a pair of black heels, a dressing gown and a bottle of water. Definitely model essentials.
A typical day for you is: I’m a typical teenager … I’m up at 7am to get ready for school. After school, hang out with my friends, I come home and watch Netflix whilst doing some homework and interact with my family.

The last reality check you received: Realising that not everybody is your friend
What legacy would you like to leave? I want to become a very successful model with a long career, which will inspire many more Black models to fulfil their dreams in an industry where models of colour continue to be a minority.

Career Challenges
What is the hardest professional decision you’ve ever had to make? Although for a very good reason, I took some time out from modelling to focus on my exams, which was beneficial as I passed! But because modelling is something I’m very passionate about, not doing it for such a long time was really hard because it was like I’d lost a part of me.
Biggest Career Mistake: I wouldn’t say I’ve made any mistakes so far.
Most common & avoidable mistake you see in your career: Not taking enough risks. If I didn’t put myself out there at 13 years old I wouldn’t have been blessed with all the opportunities I’ve had so far.

You live in: I’m a London girl
Favourite food: I absolutely love Italian food, especially pizza.
Biggest life lesson you’ve learned: Always be humble.
What do you do for leisure? I love shopping and travelling
One app or piece of technology you cannot do without: My iPhone.
Your most over-used word/phrase: I say ‘gosh’ a lot.
